This Is How I Know I'm Not From Here

Yesterday’s weather forecast from Oregon Public Broadcasting:
“Very pleasant at the coast today: Overcast, with highs 65 to 75 degrees.”

Leave it to the state that invented the term “sun break” (as in, “showers most of the day, occasional sun breaks in the afternoon”) to consider "very pleasant" a cloudy, cool day at the beach...in AUGUST.

Off the beaten path. That's Oregon.

I think I could live in Oregon. I'm a cloudy-day kinda gal. :-)

I could live in a cave. The Flathead Valley in NW Montana was cloudy almost all the time in Winter. In fact, when we were designing our solar house up there we found one book that mentioned the Flathead Valley as one of the cloudiest winter areas, to point out that solar was so great that it was 'even useful in the Flathead Valley of MT'. Laura, however, got so depressed in the Winters that we had to move to a sunnier clime. I don't even notice when the shades and curtains are drawn in our house, but she likes to open them up in the daytime. I wonder why some people need sunshine and others don't.

Melissa, you'd love it here. Most cities have traffic accidents when it rains. In Portland, we have traffic accidents when the sun's out.

Walter, I can handle clouds all winter. It's clouds all summer that make us depressed. And I'm with Laura--I want the shakes open in daytime! One of the reasons we bought our house is because of all the big, old-fashioned, south-facing windows. Let there be light!

Personally, as I swelter here through the dog days in LA, I could do with a little Oregon beach weather. Oh, for the rainy season! (but I'm glad it isn't a 12 month season)

Actually, one of the most beautiful days we spent at the Oregon coast was New Year's Day. Freezing, but beautiful--not a cloud in the sky, and (since it was New Year's) not a soul on the whole beach except us. So what if we were bundled up in coats and scarves?
